Ship Construction – Longitudinal Elements

Longitudinal Construction Elements

In longitudinal framing, the primary structural members run longitudinally along the ship's length, providing significant resistance to longitudinal bending moments. This system is commonly used in larger vessels that are subjected to severe longitudinal stresses.

Components of a Longitudinal Framing System

Longitudinal Girders: The primary structural members that run longitudinally along the ship's length, providing the backbone of the structure.

Transverse Frames: Secondary structural members that are spaced at intervals and connect the longitudinal girders, providing transverse strength and rigidity.

Bulkheads: Vertical walls that divide the ship into compartments, providing watertight integrity and structural support.

Deck Plating: The steel plates that form the deck of the ship.

Side Shell Plating: The steel plates that form the sides of the ship's hull.

Bottom Plating: The steel plates that form the bottom of the ship's hull.
